Supporting and Helping Breastfeeding Mamas

Your Journey to nourish and recharge being a breastfeeding mama is no small feat. Whether you're navigating sleepless nights, figuring out feedings, or trying to balance everything life throws at you, it’s easy to forget that you, too, need nurturing and care.

As a mama myself, I know how quickly we can put our own needs aside while caring for our little ones. But the truth is: self-care is key to being able to care for others. So, if you’re a breastfeeding mama (or know someone who is), let’s talk about ways to support and help you on this beautiful, but sometimes challenging, journey.

  1. Stay Hydrated: Drink, Drink, Drink! Breastfeeding requires a lot of water – your body is working overtime to produce milk, and staying hydrated is essential to keeping your supply up and your energy levels steady. Aim for at least 8 cups of water a day (or more if you're thirsty!). Add a little twist to your hydration with herbal teas, coconut water or infused water to keep things interesting. Keep a bottle nearby and sip often throughout the day.
  2. Rest and Sleep When You Can: We all know how precious sleep is, but as a new mum, it often feels like a distant memory. Try to rest whenever possible. Power naps when your little one naps can make a world of difference. The more rest you get, the better your milk supply, mood, and overall well-being will be. If someone offers to help, say yes! – even if it’s just for a short while. You deserve it and know that they do want to help you!
  3. Fuel Your Body with Nutritious Foods: Your body is doing incredible things right now, so it’s crucial to feed it with the right nutrients. Protein, healthy fats, and fibre are essential to give you sustained energy throughout the day. Our range of nutrient dense baking mixes are packed with these powerful ingredients, providing quick, easy, and delicious fuel. Our Triple Chocolate Cookies and Chocolate & Raspberry Fudge Bites (just to name a few) are perfect for busy breastfeeding mamas. They’re filled with wholesome ingredients like oats, almonds. hemp seeds, flaxseeds, and chia seeds. – all of which are packed with healthy fats, fibre, and protein to help keep you feeling full and energized. Not only do these snacks taste amazing, but they’re also designed to provide the nutrients your body needs as you navigate breastfeeding.
  4. Add in Natural Galactagogues: Sometimes, our milk supply needs a little extra support. That’s where galactagogues come in. These are natural foods or herbs that support milk production. Our Lactation Range includes products like our Lactation Hot Chocolate and Lactation Baking Blends, which are packed with galactagogues like brewer's yeast, oats and seeds. These ingredients work together to support your milk supply, all while nourishing your body with the vitamins and minerals it needs. Our Lactation Hot Chocolate is a real treat, offering a comforting, warm drink that supports your milk supply while also giving you that little moment of bliss you deserve. Why not make a cup and pair it with one of our delicious Lactation Cookies? They make the perfect combo for both your milk and keeping your energy up!
  5. Listen to Your Body and Seek Support: Every breastfeeding journey is unique, and it’s okay to ask for help when you need it. Whether it’s from your partner, a friend, or a lactation consultant, don’t hesitate to reach out if you’re struggling. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Being surrounded by supportive people can make all the difference in your experience.

Remember, Mama, you are doing an amazing job. I know it’s not always easy, and some days might feel overwhelming. But you’re giving your baby an amazing start in life, and that’s something to be proud of. So, take a deep breath, nurture your body, and remember that self-care isn’t selfish – it’s essential.
